» Feature Writer John Blatchford - Biotope Tanks

This article suggests that hobbyists might be able to add significantly to our understanding of marine ecosystems by experimenting with the use of 'Biotope Tanks' alongside their marine aquaria. Before a 'winning' setup is arrived at there will probably be many 'failures' - this is how we learn by experimentation. Contributing brief details of your 'failures' (and 'successes!') to this discussion might be a good way to help other enthusiasts.
Comments about this article (an those in the series being written by Ret Talbot) would also be very welcome.

Ret Talbot here. I'm very pleased to be working with John on this series of articles, as we are both passionate about the intersection of the aquarium hobby and marine science. In the middle of the nineteenth century, at the birth of the marine hobby, hobbyists and scientists worked side-by-side to promote a broader understanding of our marine ecosystems--their functions, diversity and interconnectedness. Today--in the Year of the Reef--with massive degradation happening annually (daily) to our reefs worldwide, there has never been a better time for us to strive to understand the complex interactions that sustain the viability of this critical ecosystem. We welcome your thoughts and feedback.
